Prior that rule amendment, a forward pass had to be made from 5 yards or more behind the line of scrimmage.

In Canadian football, forward passes were first permitted in 1929. The play, however, remained a minor tactic in the game for several years. Jack Jacobs of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is recognized, for popularizing the forward pass in the Western Interprovincial Football Union. This changed the Canadian game from what used to be a run-dominated game to the passing game it is today.
